Sex therapy is a specialized, highly focused form of clinical talk therapy designed to help individuals and partners navigate intimacy issues, sexual dysfunction, and relationship disconnects. As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), my approach is deeply rooted in understanding the whole person—looking at the biological, psychological, and social factors that influence your sexual well-being. Many people come into therapy feeling isolated, broken, or confused by their experiences, so the immediate goal is to establish a safe, profoundly non-judgmental environment. We work collaboratively to dismantle the myths and unrealistic expectations society often places on sex and intimacy. From there, we explore both the emotional and physical aspects of your sex life to identify barriers to connection. This might involve exploring communication patterns, unearthing deeply held beliefs about pleasure, or developing practical skills to manage performance anxiety. Ultimately, a sex therapist serves as a trusted guide to help you rebuild confidence, foster vulnerability with your partner, and cultivate a deeply satisfying, authentic sexual life.

Clients seek support for a wide spectrum of deeply personal challenges, ranging from mismatched libidos and painful sex to erectile unpredictability and a profound sense of emotional disconnect. A significant portion of my practice at Fuller Counseling Group focuses on the complex intersection of sexuality and high-demand environments. We do extensive work around religious shame, particularly for clients who grew up navigating purity culture or rigid orthodoxies. These backgrounds often instill deep-seated feelings of guilt, fear, or inadequacy surrounding natural sexual desires, which can manifest as physical pain or emotional numbing during intimacy. We work gently to untangle those inherited beliefs so you can reclaim your bodily autonomy and experience pleasure without guilt.
Additionally, we critically examine the use of "addiction labels." While out-of-control sexual behaviors can cause genuine distress in your life and relationships, jumping to the label of "sex addict" is often highly stigmatizing and unhelpful. Instead of pathologizing you, we look beneath the surface. We view these behaviors through a trauma-informed and attachment-based lens, understanding them as deeply ingrained coping mechanisms for unaddressed pain, stress, or relational disconnection. By shifting away from shame-inducing labels, we can focus on profound healing, rebuilding trust, and establishing healthy, intentional boundaries.

Accessibility and comfort are foundational to the therapeutic process, which is why we offer flexible options for how we meet. Our physical office is located in Meridian, Idaho, providing a warm, discreet, and welcoming environment for clients throughout the Treasure Valley, including Boise and Nampa. However, because conversations around intimacy require immense vulnerability, many clients feel most secure engaging from the privacy of their own homes. To support this, we offer, HIPAA-compliant video sessions. This telehealth option is fully available for any client physically located in Nevada, Idaho or Utah. Furthermore, we recognize the growing need for specialized intimacy support across state lines, which is why we are actively expanding our clinical footprint.

Before entering clinical practice as an LCSW, I spent 20 years as a full time seminary teacher in a church. This unique, two-decade background gives me an inside understanding of how rigid orthodoxies and purity culture can deeply impact a person's nervous system and sense of self. I know exactly how difficult it is to untangle your identity and sexuality from inherited expectations. My transition into clinical work and sex therapy was driven by a desire to provide the exact kind of safe, non-judgmental space that is so often missing for individuals and couples navigating a faith transition.

While traditional addiction models exist and are used by some professionals, I recognize that they aren't the right fit for everyone. Being labeled a "sex addict" can often deepen feelings of shame and leave clients feeling perpetually broken. As an alternative, my practice utilizes the Out of Control Sexual Behavior (OCSB) framework. This approach offers a highly effective, non-judgmental way to understand and address distressing sexual behaviors without pathologizing your desires or relying on shame-based interventions.

The OCSB framework is a clinical approach designed to help individuals whose sexual urges, thoughts, or behaviors feel overwhelming or out of alignment with their life goals. Instead of demanding rigid, lifelong abstinence enforced by fear, OCSB focuses on sexual health and personal integrity. In our sessions, we work collaboratively to define your personal values and relationship agreements. We then develop practical, sustainable strategies to bring your sexual behaviors back into alignment with those core values, allowing you to regain control and rebuild trust.

My entire practice is rooted in a positive, comprehensive view of human sexuality. The core principles of sexual health that guide my work are enthusiastic consent, physical and emotional safety, profound honesty, and shared pleasure. Whether you are recovering from religious trauma, navigating a desire discrepancy, or addressing out-of-control behaviors, healing requires moving away from intimacy based on obligation, fear, or performance. By embracing these core principles, clients can shed inherited guilt and build an authentic, confident, and fulfilling sex life.
